About FIRST
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring the next generation of innovators and problem solvers through hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, FIRST creates programs that combine the excitement of competition with real-world learning.
From designing and building robots to collaborating with mentors and peers, students develop not only technical skills but also teamwork, leadership, and communication abilities. Through programs like the FIRST Robotics Competition, participants experience what it’s like to work in engineering environments, tackling real challenges and applying classroom concepts to bring creative solutions to life.
About Our Team
FRC Team 1811 FRESH from East Side High School in Newark, NJ was started in 2006 by Andrea Mullen, a former Chemistry teacher at the school. Back then, the team had only six students, one drill, and a tiny closet to work in. Andrea was the only mentor, but she believed in the team and helped it grow.
The team name, FRESH, which stands for FIRST Robotics East Side High, has stayed the same since the beginning. It became a symbol of who we are and where we started. Over time, more students joined, and the team began to grow stronger with each season.
Today, Team 1811 has counting... student members, two mentors, and one graduate mentor. David Koethe joined in 2010 and has always lifted the team up. Silvia Duarte joined in 2019 and is always ready to help anyone who needs it. Together, we continue the FRESH legacy. Working hard, helping each other, and always moving forward.
